Loved this incredibly thoughtful and intelligent piece on a topic that is so overlooked, Victoria.

Having started this unexpected journey some years ago, I'm further along this road in my life.

Yes, it's totally different. The more you were dedicated and immersed in a professional career with all the pressures that brings, I think the more you have to think about, prepare and plan for this unexpected transition in your life.

My approach has been not to retire. I've scaled back because I'm listening to the messages my body is sending me, but I've made one of my most rewarding hobbies, my new career - 2-3 days a week. Doing something I love.

I get up early and go to the gym every morning, come back for coffee then do a couple of hours work.

I stop at lunchtime and then do whatever needs doing.

I volunteer and work with charities and help friends and concentrate on trying to use my knowledge and life's experiences to make a small difference if I can.

To give something back.

It might not be for everyone and I'm not sure it's the perfect transition, but I'm still working on it.

Much like life, it's work in progress.
